Background

To call the Yamaha U3 Upright Piano popular would be an understatement; they're so renowned that people ask for them by name. Finished in sleek black gloss and containing Yamaha's characteristic responsive and reliable action, teachers, pianists, and regular players alike wish to test out the Yamaha U3.

The rare combination of dynamic response and unparalleled consistency mark it as a unique piano – like a stallion bred with a workhorse.

Featured as part of the "U series," at 52-inches, it is the biggest of the selection. Yet, despite all of its incredible benefits, the Yamaha U3 piano remains eminently affordable and suitable for both professional and domestic settings.

Specifications

For the U series, Yamaha went back to the drawing board. Its action delivers a rich tone; experienced players will notice every graduation of dynamic response at their fingers. How much pressure you give and the sound you release is all down to you.

The Yamaha U3's hammers were also redesigned to optimize tone, which is clear yet conservative. The soundboard is cut from solid spruce and is larger than is typical for a piano of this size. When combined with the longer strings, it imbues the U3 with a powerful dynamic capacity and depth of tone.

The bridge and pinblock are constructed from hard maple, and a metal action rail is used – preventing alterations due to temperature or humidity.

History

The origins of Yamaha began in 1887 when a watchmaker named Torakusu Yamaha founded Japan's first reed organ company. After visiting the US in 1899, he learned how to build pianos, transporting back this knowledge to Japan. In the century or more since Yamaha grew into one of the most revered piano makers in the world. The popularity of the Yamaha U3 is a culmination of their efforts.
